“After experiencing extreme brake fade at the track, I discovered my almost new OEM rotors were wearing extremely fast and not dissipating heat fast enough for the abuse I was dishing out. I knew I needed a more advanced 2 piece rotor so I decided on DBA rotors for my Mitsubishi Evo IX track car. I instruct HPDE events and compete in Time Trials events every month so my brakes get a lot of abuse. I chose the DBA 5000 series slotted 2-piece rotors for the front and the 4000 series slotted for the rears. Using the same fluid and same pads and only changing rotors I was shocked how good the pedal felt the first track event. I kept waiting for the fade to come and it never did. I consistently get them to 1,000 degrees and that doesn’t slow them down one bit. The rotors have lasted 2 full years of racing and street driving and still have life left in them. These rotors give me confidence and consistency in braking on every turn!”

As the name suggests, this is a rally event that includes 10 x Tarmac stages over a two-day period (including 3 x night stages). The event is very competitive and normally held towards the end of each season in South Africa.

Wayne Hay Performance entered a car this year under the Subaru Club of South Africa banner. The car which was driven by well known Subaru tuner Wayne Hay and his navigator R. Widdop won the event outright by winning 7 of the 10 stages and placing 2nd in the remaining 3 stages.

Wayne runs DBA 5000-series T3 discs on the front of the car as well as Endless N35S compound race pads and Endless RF-650 race brake fluid – supplied by Powerbrake.

One of the night stages on the Friday night involved a number of laps of the Zwartkops race circuit outside Pretoria. To add to the challenge the teams had to negotiate in an anti-clockwise direction (the circuit is normally run clockwise).
This circuit is notorious hard on brakes… Being a rally event there was no opportunity for the teams to complete cool-down laps after the track stage and the cars had to leave the circuit and stop at a timing point immediately. Of course this is not good for brakes at all but the teams had no choice.

During the Rally his front disc temperatures peaked well in excess of 700 deg C and yet the combination of DBA rotors and Endless pads and brake fluid provided very consistent, fade free braking throughout the event.

Marine Gunnery Sergeant John Hayes loves working on cars and especially his pride and joy, his 2009 Corvette.  However, he suffered life-threatening injuries on a routine mission in Afghanistan on December 28, 2010 when he stepped on a buried IED (improvised explosive device) resulting in the traumatic amputations of both of his legs and half of his pelvis.

Hayes has endured over sixty surgeries, and continues to be treated at the newly renamed Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.GySgt Hayes and his wife Janel flew to Tampa, Florida, for several days in July to work alongside the hosts of Two Guys Garage. John was thrilled with the entire experience and WE had even more fun watching him do what he loves: WORK ON CARS!

While still recovering from his injuries, John has completed several races, including the Marine Corps Marathon, a Disney Half Marathon and the Boston Marathon on his hand bike.  He is learning to ski and is determined to live a full and active life.

John is a native of Jacksonville, Florida.  His wife and three young daughters are a great source of motivation for him.  He is driving again with the use of hand-controls.  He will soon retire from the military and return to Florida.
